If you’re planning to visit or relocate to Panama, one of the first things you’ll notice is that Panamanian Spanish sounds a little different from what you may have learned in school.

Panamanians speak quickly, shorten words, and use a lot of local slang that you probably won’t find in traditional Spanish textbooks.

The good news is you don’t need to be fluent in Spanish to live comfortably in Panama, but learning some everyday words and expressions will make your life much easier.

It also helps you connect with locals, navigate daily situations, and feel more confident when you’re out and about.

Below are some common Panamanian Spanish words and phrases you’ll hear all the time.

Common Panamanian Spanish Words and slangs You’ll Hear Often

QUE Xopa

One of the most famous Panamanian slang words.

It’s a casual greeting that basically means:

“What’s up?”

Example:
Xopa, mopri!

Mopri

This means friend or buddy.

It’s actually the word “primo” (cousin) spelled backwards and became popular in urban slang.

Example:
Ese es mi mopri.

Chuzo

You’ll hear this word constantly.

It’s used to express surprise, frustration, or excitement.

Examples:
Chuzo! That’s expensive.
Chuzo, it’s raining again.

Vaina

This is one of the most versatile words in Panamanian Spanish.

It can mean thing, situation, problem, or stuff depending on context.

Examples:

¿Qué es esa vaina?
(What is that thing?)

No quiero problemas con esa vaina.
(I don’t want problems with that situation.)

Plata

This simply means money.

Example:

No tengo plata ahora.
(I don’t have money right now.)

Do You Need Spanish to Live in Panama?

This is one of the most common questions people ask.

The short answer is not necessarily, depending on where you live.

In areas like Panama City, Coronado, Boquete, and other expat communities, you’ll find many people who speak English.

However, Spanish becomes much more useful when dealing with things like:

  • Taxi drivers
  • Local markets
  • Contractors and service providers
  • Government offices
  • Smaller towns and neighborhoods

Even learning a few key phrases can make everyday life much easier.

Why Traditional Spanish Classes Don’t Always Help

One thing many foreigners notice after moving to Panama is that the Spanish they learned in school sounds very different from how locals actually speak.

For instance, I had to enroll in Spanish classes when I first came to Panama because it was totally different to what I learnt in school.

This was also crucial for me to faster understand locals when they speak, coming from an English-speaking country.

Panamanians often:

  • Speak quickly
  • Drop certain letters when speaking
  • Use slang that isn’t taught in traditional courses
  • Combine words in casual conversation

That’s why many expats say they understand textbook Spanish but still struggle to understand locals at first.

Learning real-life phrases and expressions used in Panama is often much more helpful than memorizing formal grammar rules.
