One of the biggest questions people ask when considering a move to Panama is: “What is the healthcare really like?”
The short answer? Panama offers modern, high-quality private healthcare at a fraction of U.S. prices, especially in major cities like Panama City and David. Many doctors are trained in the United States or Europe, and English-speaking medical professionals are common in private hospitals.
For expats and foreigners, private hospitals are typically the preferred option. These facilities offer shorter wait times, modern equipment, bilingual staff, and access to internationally trained specialists.
Below are some of the best private hospitals in Panama where locals, expats, and international patients commonly receive care.
Best Private Hospitals in Panama
The Panama Clinic
The Panama Clinic is one of the newer, modern medical facilities in Panama City, located in the Santa Maria area. It was designed to provide a U.S.-style healthcare experience and often attracts expats and international patients.
This is my personal go-to private hospital for everything when it comes to receiving medical attention/procedures! It used to be Pacifica Salud before TPC existed.
Why people choose it:
- Modern, state-of-the-art facility
- Many U.S.-trained doctors and specialists
- English widely spoken
- Advanced imaging and diagnostic services
The hospital also serves as a hub for specialists in cardiology, orthopedics, and preventative medicine. Because of its modern design and patient-focused services, it has quickly become one of the preferred hospitals for foreigners living in Panama.
It is also one of the more costly private hospitals in the capital.
Pacífica Salud (Hospital Punta Pacífica)
Pacífica Salud is widely considered one of the most advanced hospitals in Panama. It is affiliated with Johns Hopkins Medicine International, which helps maintain high medical standards and international protocols.
Located in the upscale Punta Pacífica neighborhood of Panama City, this hospital offers world-class care and attracts patients from across Latin America and the United States.
This used to be my top pick for medical care in Panama but I’ve since switched to The Panama Clinic. But I have also received excellent care at this hospital.
Highlights
- Affiliation with Johns Hopkins Medicine
- Advanced emergency and trauma care
- Specialties in cardiology, oncology, and neurology
- Modern surgical facilities
Many international insurance providers work directly with this hospital, which is one reason it is popular among expats.

Hospital Paitilla / Hospiten paitilla (Centro Médico Paitilla)
Centro Médico Paitilla is another highly respected private hospital located in the Marbella area of Panama City. It has been serving patients for decades and offers a wide range of specialties.
They have recently changed their name to Hospiten Paitilla. I have received excellent care at this hospital.
Key services
- Orthopedics and trauma care
- Cardiology and cardiovascular procedures
- Maternity services
- Emergency care
The hospital treats both local and international patients and is considered one of the country’s leading private medical centers.
Hospital San Fernando
Founded in 1949, Hospital San Fernando is one of the oldest private hospitals in Panama and remains one of the most respected healthcare institutions in the country.
It offers a broad range of medical services and is particularly well known for its oncology and specialty treatment programs.
Personally I haven’t used this facility before but a lot of locals recommend it to me. Its definitely one of the more affordable options for private healthcare.
What it’s known for
- Cancer treatment and oncology services
- Cardiology and internal medicine
- Diagnostic imaging and surgery
Many expats choose San Fernando because of its long-standing reputation and experienced medical staff.
Hospital Santa Fe
Hospital Santa Fe is a private medical center known for its patient-focused care and specialized treatments. The hospital offers a wide range of services including emergency care, diagnostic imaging, surgery, and preventative medicine.
Why patients choose Santa Fe
- Modern medical equipment
- Strong reputation for specialty care
- Comfortable patient facilities
It is also one of the hospitals frequently used by residents who live outside the downtown Panama City core.
I haven’t personally been here but its another affordable option for private healthcare.

MiniMed HOSPITAL AND Clinics
MiniMed is a growing healthcare network in Panama that includes a full-service hospital in Panama City along with several clinics located throughout the country.
Many expats and residents use MiniMed for both routine medical care and more advanced treatments, depending on the location. The network focuses on providing accessible healthcare with shorter wait times and affordable pricing.
One reason MiniMed is popular among foreigners is its membership-style healthcare program, which can include doctor visits, laboratory services, imaging, and other basic medical services for a fixed annual fee.
This makes MiniMed a practical option for routine medical care, especially for people who prefer a more predictable healthcare cost structure.
I have been to several of their clinics, their service is very affordable and they are very efficient.

Hospitals in Chiriquí (Western Panama)
If you live in or plan to move to western Panama, especially David or Boquete, there are several reputable hospitals available.
Hospital Chiriquí
Hospital Chiriquí is one of the main private hospitals in the western region of Panama and provides a wide range of medical services including cardiology, orthopedics, and emergency care.
Many residents in Boquete and the surrounding areas rely on this hospital for advanced care.
Mae Lewis Medical Center
Mae Lewis is another well-known private medical facility in David. It provides diagnostic imaging, outpatient services, and specialty care for residents in the province of Chiriquí. (Wikipedia)
For many expats living in Boquete, David’s hospitals serve as their primary healthcare centers.
Average Healthcare Costs in Panama
One of the reasons many people relocate to Panama is the affordability of private healthcare.
Typical costs can look something like this depending on which private institution and where in the country:
- General doctor visit: $10 – $25
- Specialist visit: $40 – $75
- Emergency room visit: $25+ per hour
- Maternity hospital stay: $1,200 – $2,500
- Cesarean delivery: $3,000+
Even major procedures can cost significantly less than in the United States. For example, surgeries that cost tens of thousands of dollars in the U.S. may cost far less in Panama while still providing high-quality care.
Do Panama Hospitals Accept U.S. or International Insurance?
Many private hospitals in Panama work with international insurance providers, especially in Panama City. These commonly include:
- International health insurance plans
- Some U.S.-based insurance plans
- Travel medical insurance
- Certain military or global insurance providers
However, coverage varies depending on the hospital and insurance plan. Some facilities may ask patients to pay upfront and seek reimbursement later.
I’ll cover how health insurance works in Panama in a separate post, since there are several options available depending on your residency status.

Public vs Private Healthcare in Panama
Panama has both a public healthcare system and a private healthcare system, and many residents use a combination of the two.
The public system includes hospitals operated by the Ministry of Health (MINSA) and the Social Security system known as Caja de Seguro Social (CSS). These facilities provide low-cost or free care to Panamanian citizens and residents who contribute to the system through employment.
While public hospitals provide essential care, many expats and foreigners prefer private hospitals because they typically offer:
- Shorter wait times
- More modern facilities
- English-speaking doctors and staff
- More comfortable patient rooms
Private healthcare in Panama is widely regarded as high quality and is still significantly more affordable than in countries like the United States.
For this reason, most expats choose to use private hospitals and clinics for routine care, specialist visits, and medical procedures.
What to Expect at Your First Doctor Visit in Panama
If you are coming from the United States or Canada, your first medical appointment in Panama may feel a little different but often in a good way.
One of the biggest surprises for newcomers is how fast and straightforward the process can be.
In many private clinics and hospitals:
- Appointments can often be scheduled within a day or two
- Wait times are usually short
- Doctors tend to spend more time with patients
It is also common for patients to pay directly for the visit at the front desk, especially if they do not have local insurance. Receipts are usually provided so patients can submit claims to their international insurance provider if applicable.
Another difference is that many doctors in Panama communicate with patients through WhatsApp for follow-ups, test results, or quick questions. This level of accessibility is something many expats appreciate.
Overall, most foreigners are pleasantly surprised by the quality, affordability, and accessibility of healthcare in Panama.
Why Panama Is Becoming a Medical Tourism Destination
Panama has quietly become one of the top medical tourism destinations in Latin America, attracting patients from the United States, Canada, and the Caribbean who are looking for high-quality healthcare at more affordable prices.
Several factors contribute to Panama’s growing reputation for medical tourism.
First, the country has modern private hospitals equipped with advanced medical technology, many of which meet international healthcare standards. Hospitals such as Pacífica Salud and The Panama Clinic offer services comparable to facilities in North America.
Second, many doctors practicing in Panama have trained in the United States, Europe, or other internationally recognized medical programs, and English-speaking medical staff are common in private hospitals.
Another major factor is cost. Medical procedures in Panama can often cost 50–70% less than in the United States, depending on the treatment.
Some of the most common procedures sought by medical tourists include:
- Dental procedures
- Cosmetic surgery
- Orthopedic surgery
- Cardiology treatments
- Preventative health screenings
Panama also offers a convenient location for international patients. With Tocumen International Airport serving as a major hub for the Americas, many visitors can travel to Panama in just a few hours from major U.S. cities.
Because of its combination of modern hospitals, internationally trained doctors, and affordable care, Panama continues to grow as a destination for people seeking both medical treatment and a comfortable recovery environment.
Final Thoughts
Panama offers a healthcare system that surprises many newcomers. The country has a strong network of modern private hospitals, experienced doctors, and affordable medical services.
For expats and foreigners relocating to Panama, hospitals such as Pacífica Salud, Paitilla, San Fernando, and The Panama Clinic provide excellent care that rivals many hospitals in North America.
Whether you are living in Panama City or in western Panama near Boquete, quality medical care is readily available when you need it.
